A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The official announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its duties in national infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid pace, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national undertakings.
