European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
