Larian Studios Unveil a Latest Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The buzz around The Game Awards was significant, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team is likely crafting a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it sparked the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—elements that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities only possible by choosing a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
