Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who discontinue popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such medications should be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

People who have come off the medication describe a powerful return of appetite.

"I experienced something that goes on and you become starving," described one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural management.
